<正> IntroductionOf the four language skills many people feel that listening is the most difficult.Students can be goodat reading and writing, while their listening levels are elementary.Yet it is very important forlanguage learners to improve their listening comprehension, because it greatly affects communicativeability.Anderson and Lynch pointed out,‘Listening is an essential skill for communication’(1988:60).So although the importance of teaching listing is gradually being recognised, there aremany problems. The teaching methods are dull, which inhibit students' progress. The need to improvethe teaching of listening is a serious problem for teachers.

<正> IntroductionNowadays English teachers feel that teaching grammar is a tough problem to solve.Languageteaching is no longer regarded simply as imparting knowledge about the target language, but teachinglearners how to actually use the target language in real-life communication.Developments in modernlinguistic and teaching methodologies have challenged traditional teaching perspectives, however,inChina English teaching is still generally conducted in the traditional way. This is especially so forgrammar teaching.Grammar is so much the main concern in class that it is explained explicitly, andthe language materials and samples are arranged to highlight it.English is taught by giving studentsdetailed explanations of the grammatical points in isolation.Teachers make a careful analysis of thetexts to make sure that students have understood every single word of the text they are learning.Somepeople might think that these students should learn English very well, because they are learningEnglish so systematically, but this is not the case at all.

<正> IntroductionLearning style is an important way of providing information on how to make teaching moreinteresting and effective. If,as teachers,we claim to pursue the best, most efficient ways of teaching, shouldn't we also try to understand more about how people learn best?Inspired by Nunan'sUnderstanding Language Classrooms, and spurred on by genuine curiosity we set about a small-scalesurvey on learning preferences. As an experiment,we adapted Willing's questionnaire‘How do youlike to learn best?’(Willing,in Nunan,1989).See Table 3.

<正> IntroductionIn China, the English as a foreign language (EFL) class for non-English majors at college levelprovides little opportunity for oral interaction among students. One solution to this problem is toadopt a series of communicative teaching techniques.Role play is one such technique. This paperattempts to assess the value of role play by analysing our experience of using it as a communicationactivity.

<正> IntroductionIn China, intensive reading is the main method for teaching English. One feature of the textbooks isthat they all have large quantities of new words in each text,so vocabulary is one of the mostimportant aspects of this course.Recently,I conducted a survey among students who entered thePetroleum University in Shandong. To the question‘What is the greatest problem in your Englishstudies?’,82 out of the t00 students answered-vocabulary.This,to some extent, suggests that ourapproaches to vocabulary teaching should be improved. This article explores more effective ways toteach vocabulary. It suggests the idea of classifying and grouping vocabulary items and how to teachthem differently.A series of task-based activities are recommended to present and review vocabulary.

<正> Introduction‘Integrated skills is when the main language skills are practised in conjunction with each other.(Willis,1981)In EFL teaching in China, most teachers believe that skills should be practised in isolation in theclassroom. That is,in a reading lesson, special attention is paid only to reading.Lessons generallyfollow the same pattern going through the new words;reading the text aloud paragraph by paragraph;explaining difficult points(especially the grammatical items);asking comprehension questions;andfinally doing the exercises after the text.In such a reading lesson, even the reading skill itself is notpractised, let alone other skills. What is more, both teacher and students find this kind of teachingdull and de-motivating.

<正> IntroductionCommunicative competence is now widely recognised as the goal of language teaching.A studentcannot obtain this competence in the target language without knowledge of the target culture sincelanguage and culture are closely interrelated. From this,it follows that EFL teaching involvesteaching of two languages and two cultures,in our case,English and Chinese. Then what is culture?Culture is‘the customs, beliefs, and music, and all the other products of human thought made by aparticular group of people at a particular time.’(Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English,1990:251)

<正> IntroductionHistorically there has been a division between the classroom teacher who‘does practice’and theeducational researcher who‘establishes theories’.Similarly in teacher education programmes, thefocus has largely been on the transmission of research-based theories and skills from trainer totrainee.Teaching practice is usually listed as a separate component to be accomplished, often at theend of a period of training, and the limited time available for it can rarely provide realisticopportunities for trainees to put theory into practice. When our trainees return to their institutions theexcitement of the exposure to various theories and techniques are soon gone,to be replaced by thereality of classroom life. Many former trainees rapidly find themselves overburdened with teachingresponsibilities, and the constraints of their particular teaching situations can make it very difficult toapply theories they have learned during training directly into practice.

<正> IntroductionFrom time to time in joint Sino-British ELT Projects there is conflict. This is not unusual.Conflict isinevitable in all areas of life no matter how you try to avoid it.Often it is tempting to try and ignoreconflict in the hope that it will go away. However, the practical way of approaching the problem ofconflict in general and Advanced Teacher Training Course (ATTC) Projects in particular is to thinkof it as a positive opportunity for beneficial change;even though conflict is an opposition of interestsit is not necessarily synonymous with hostility. It only manifests itself as hostility when both sideschoose opposing positions and are unwilling to negotiate from them.Such hostility is often the resultof a personality clash. In this paper I will focus on identifying some of the cultural causes of intra-project,non-academic,administrative and managerial disputes in ATTC Projects and consider howsuch disagreements can be prevented through simple and effective negotiation.

<正> IntroductionThe attitudes towards foreign learners' errors have changed remarkably from the 1960s to recentyears. In the eyes of behaviourists in the 1960s,errors were considered terrible.Teachers tried tostructure the classroom situation so as to make it ideally impossible for students to make errors.Sincethe evolution of Chomsky's theory and modernism, teachers have begun to believe thatcommunication in the language is more important than a sterile perfection of form.and therefore, they have become more tolerant of students' errors.Making errors has been recognised more andmore as inevitable and as an essential part of language learning.

<正> Introduction‘Tell me and I forget;teach me and I remember;involve me and I learn.’In English languageteaching in China, intensive reading has always been considered one of the most importantcomponents of the curriculum.Students busily memorise new vocabulary and grammar in and out ofclass. They seldom have the opportunity to use what they have learned:to speak the target language inreal life or to listen to native speakers.Consequently, the students' listening and speaking abilityremains weak and they have little confidence in their communicative competence. This appliesparticularly to science majors. They think English is only a tool for them to read articles or referencebooks related to their own research field. The skills they most need are reading and translating.Because of the lack of listening and speaking practice, they cannot understand spoken English and atthe same time fail to express themselves in English.
