  • “WE DID IT OURSELVES”INDEPENDENT LEARNING IN MIDDLE SCHOOLS

    Neville Grant;

    <正> Recently,I was standing in the corridor of a middle school,and I heard the following ex-change between a student and a teacher who,like so many teachers these days,was hurrying,ina harassed sort of way,from one classroom to another,her arms filled with exercise books andother educational paraphernalia."Excuse me,Miss!"said the student."I don't quite understand the third conditional!""Good question!"replied the teacher."Why don't you look it up in the grammar notes at theback of the book?"Saying which,she swept off to her next class.The question arises:was this teacher a good teacher,or a bad teacher?I hope that we shall inthe course of the next hour or so seek to establish an answer to this question!

    <正> Teacher talk is of crucial significance to the ELT classroom.However,little research hasbeen carried out on teacher talk.This paper discusses the types of teacher talk,analyzes the vari-ous factors affecting teacher talk,and puts forward some suggestions to make teacher talk moreeffective and efficient.Teacher talk (TT) is of crucial significance for all classrooms,particularly the ELT class-room,because in the ELT classroom,language is not only the objective of the course,but also themedia to achieve the objective.Both the organization of the classroom and the process of acquisi-tion are achieved through TT.Whether an ELT class is successful or not depends to a large degreeon the effectiveness of TT.However,not many professionals in China have realized the impor-tance of TT.Little research has been carried out on TT.(Wang Yinquan,1999:54) The papercasts away a brick to attract jade.

  • ON STUDENTS'PARTICIPATION IN ENGLISH CLASSES

    <正> The first possible difficulty an English teacher may encounter in his or her endeavor to make Eng-lish class more communicative may be students' reluctance to participate.But there are reasonsbehind this seeming reluctance.Based on a recent survey,the paper analyzes students' participa-tion psychology and both the subjective and objective factors,which may affect students' activeparticipation in class.The writer of the paper believes that getting students started is the initialstep towards active learning and fruitful teaching.It is proposed that efforts made to get studentsinvolved should focus not only on forms of activities but also on their contents,on skill integra-tion and on establishing cooperative relationships between teacher and students and among stu-dents.

  • AN APPROACH TO IMPROVING THE TEACHING OF LISTENING

    <正> With more and more importance being attached to communicative competence,both teachers andlearners have become aware of how essential listening as a language skill is for communication.However,traditional listening classroom seems to have failed to help learners become effectiveand successful listeners both in and out of the classroom.Many learners have associated listeningcourses with pain and boredom and often complain that they benefit little from listening lessons.That explains to some extent why many learners' listening ability stagnates and remains at ele-mentary level although their other skills like reading,writing even speaking are advancing steadi-ly.This article aims to have a close look at the problems confronted by teachers in the traditionallistening classroom and,in the meantime,tries to give a brief introduction to an approach to im-proving the teaching of listening by incorporating pre-listening,while-listening and post-listeninginto an integrated listening class.

  • PROVIDING THE STUDENTS WITH EFFECTIVE FEEDBACK IN THE WRITING PROCESS

    <正> This paper focuses on providing effective feedback for the students in the writing process.Excessivemarking is defective as it reduces their motivation,whereas minimal marking is recommended as itimproves their inner drive for writing.In addition,there are other forms of feedback,such as peerfeedback,comments and face-to-face discussions.The students are required to act on the feedback totheir own advantage.It has been proved that the proposed correcting method is time-saving,chal-lenging and efficient.

  • TOWARDS A REALIZATION OF AN HOLISTIC MODEL OF TEACHING READING IN THE EFL CLASS IN CHINA

    <正> The teaching of reading in the EFL class in China is supposed to be the most important course forEnglish learners in colleges and universities because it is expected to fulfil two tasks:the develop-ment of reading skills and the development of language skills.The former set of skills is assigned tothe course called Extensive Reading,which is top-down oriented,and,like the top-down model be-fore 1980's,its emphasis on the language competence such as syntax and vocabulary often leads to"wild guessing"and misunderstanding.Another reading course,Intensive Reading,is supposed to beresponsible for the latter set of skills.This bottom-up manner of reading often results in word-to-word reading and also causes miscomprehension.The Holistic Model of Reading,as developed on thebasis of interactive models with particular concern over the Chinese learning environment,attemptsto combine the two courses into one and the result,as our studies show,turns out to be promising.

  • THEY ARE SO CREATIVE!R—EPORT ON AN EXPERIMENT TO BRING OUT STUDENTS'CREATIVE POTENTIAL

    <正> One of the frequently heard complaints from TEFL teachers is that students are too passive inlearning the textbook used for the course of Comprehensive English,and that they seldom performcreatively in the class or in doing the homework assigned.The teacher may try very hard to stimulatethe students but still fail to see much progress.This situation has induced the author to design andcarry out an experiment in teaching the course of Comprehensive English.The experiment is aimedat proving the possibility that a larger and freer arena,arranged in a more interesting way can pro-vide a better chance for students to make use of their creative power in understanding and learningEnglish texts.The result is encouraging and proves the expectations of the author.The approachused in this experiment,however,should not be applied rigidly,but with a certain degree of flexibil-ity in terms of time arrangement,the texts to be used,the number of texts for a semester and thespecific forms of tasks.
