  • MAKING DECISIONS ABOUT THE ROLE OF GRAMMAR IN LANGUAGE TEACHING

<正> Introduction After a brief introduction of the two extreme positions in EFL concerning the role of grammar in language teaching, the author introduces the idea that the decision should be made according to two factors. The first concerns learner variables, namely, learning style, age, proficiency level and educational background . The second concerns instructional objective, including learning objectives and the learner's needs. To help illustrate this viewpoint, an example is cited here to help analyze the two factors and thus

  • TEACHERS' ROLES IN THE EXTENSIVE READING CLASS

<正> Ⅰ. Introduction. Today, in most English teaching classes, owing to the popularity of the student-centered teaching approach, the traditional teacher-centered teaching approach has gradually lost its dominating place. As far as extensive reading classes are concerned, this is no exception. The more communicative student-centered approach has been popularly adopted. As a result, the teachers' roles in the reading classes are changing accordingly. A qualified teacher should be prepared to take different roles at different stages of teaching. Jeremy Harmer has pointed out that a teacher can be expected to act, for example, as a controller, an assessor, an organizer, a prompter, a participant and as a resource (Harmer, 1983). In this

  • ERRORS AND CORRECTION

<正> To err is human . Since the 1960s, most second language teachers or language theorists have regarded errors as natural and inevitable in the language learning process . Instead of regarding them as terrible and disappointing, teachers have come to realize their value. This paper will consider these values, analyze some errors and propose some effective correction techniques.

  • PREMISE OF STATE-LEVEL EXPERIMENT WITH RAPID MEMORIZATION OF ENGLISH AT TANGHE

<正> Last year we put forward a report to establish a state-level trial and applied for ratification by the Central Science Institute of Education and Research. It was a grand and unprecedented trial practice in Tanghe's history of teaching and teaching reform. Based on a good combination of the existing teaching material, the experiment was aimed at students' rapid grasp of language and partial settlement of some of the students' common problems in learning English. The reason for our decision lies in the following issues.

  • TEFL IN PRIMARY AND MIDDLE SCHOOLS OF GUANGDONG: REVIEW AND PROSPECT

<正> This paper attempts to give a brief introduction to the TEFL situation in primary and middle schools of Guangdong Province and then put forward some ideas for a TEFL development plan for the coming five years. The points of view and propositions presented are only the author's personal opinions.Guangdong Province, located in the south of China, with a comparatively developed culture and economy, is one of the provinces in China whose trade relations with foreign countries can be traced back to a time as early as the Tang Dynasty. Hence, it not only has the country's most well-known home-towns of overseas Chinese, but also keeps close relations with the outside world and consequently has had a better foundation of foreign language education in the past. Nevertheless, for a long period of time since the founding of the PRC, owing to various reasons, the quality of foreign languages teaching and learning has been very unsatisfactory. The present situation of TEFL is still far from suits the urgent needs of economic and social development today.

  • FACTORS AFFECTING CHINESE POST-GRADUATE EFL LEARNERS' ORAL PROFICIENCY

<正> The article investigates factors affecting Chinese postgraduate EFL learners' oral proficiency. Little practice, fear of errors and unscientific classroom management are found to be the major factors. Also an overemphasis on written English instruction seems to be another root cause. After the discussion of the results of this investigation a series of methods are suggested for reference.

  • PRESENTATION-AN INITIAL STEP TO INTRODUCE NEW STRUCTURES AND FUNCTIONS

<正> Introduction In English teaching, the first task for teachers should be teaching students with clear information about the language they are learning. • AN EXPLORATION ON THE CULTIVATION OF UTTERANCE INTERPRETATION AT TERTIARY LEVEL

<正> Due to the increasing opportunities for face-to-face communication, students should be able to understand utterances in a particular context. Grice's conversational implicature theory, mainly consisting of the cooperative principle and the maxims, purports to explain what is conveyed by an utterance. Austin and Searle's speech act theories contribute to the functional explanation of language and explore the illocutionary acts beyond the literal meaning of utterances. With these theories as the theoretical framework, the author proposes a way to improve students' ability to interpret utterances, that is, teaching theories of conversational implicature and speech act, creating an appropriate and plausible context and inculcating cultural knowledge of the target language.

  • NEWSPAPER CLIPPINGS: AN EXCELLENT SUPPLEMENT TO EXTENSIVE READING IN LANGUAGE LEARNING

<正> Introduction Extensive Reading, as the name indicates, is a guide for students into the vast sea of knowledge. Reading demonstrates to students that there is no end in learning knowledge. However, reading and language learning based on textbooks is far from enough because the knowledge from them is too narrow, the vocabulary is too limited and the contents are not current enough in these times of information exchange. Throughout my teaching experiments, I have found that newspaper clippings can become a very good way to bring more benefits to students' learning than I expected. It can broaden the students' horizons,

  • WARM-UP ACTIVITIES. MAKING IMPROVEMENTS IN THE INTENSIVE READING COURSE

<正> This paper points out the problems existing in the Intensive Reading Course classrooms conducted under the teacher-centred pedagogy and proposes that varied warm-up activities be applied at the beginning of every class. The purpose is to motivate the students to be active participants in class, provoke communication at different levels, and foster the top-down reading schema, all of which serve to enable the students to become effective readers. The theoretical and applicative considerations of the warm-up activities are discussed in detail in the paper.

  • HOW TO TEACH WORD-FORMATION KNOWLEDGE EFFECTIVELY?

<正> This paper discusses the question of how to teach word-formation knowledge effectively. To achieve a better result, teachers may not only be interested in the form, meaning and function of a certain word part, but also in such aspects as the determining factor which governs the choice of variant forms and the various changes brought about by the word-formation process. When teaching word parts, teachers are advised to pay attention to their usefulness and productiveness and draw their learners' attention to various linguistic patterns. A tentative procedure is suggested for the effective teaching of word-formation knowledge.

  • STUDIES IN MENTAL LEXICON AND THE IMPLICATIONS FOR ENGLISH VOCABULARY TEACHING

<正> Introduction Vocabulary is one of the indispensable components of the language system, and researchers have found that there exists a close relationship between vocabulary and other components in a language system. However, vocabulary is thought to be the most difficult component of language knowledge for a learner to grasp. Gorman (1979) pointed out that there was evidence showing that as students become more proficient in a second language, problems caused specifically by syntactical variation become less significant (cited in Crow and Quigley, 1985: 499). That is to say, vocabulary becomes a major problem in the

  • ON DEVELOPING STUDENTS' THINKING

<正> Introduction Writing is one of the most difficult tasks for language learners. It is very much the case in learning English. Many students who have been learning English for many years are very poor in writing at the sentence level. Some of the compositions are even not revisable, because the sentences written do not make any sense. On the other hand, few students can write well in English. Why? A survey on students' study habit shows that habits of learning really make a difference in students' writing proficiency. Those who can write using good English usually have good study habits, and good reading habits in particular. They pay much more attention to ideas while reading.

  • Editing 'Father & Son': Coherence and Cohesion

<正> Introduction Some writing is good in sentence structure but either poor in coherence or in cohesion. The problem of coherence is that the sequence of information is not always clear and the problem of cohesion is that the sequence of information is acceptable, while the connection between it is not so good. The question is how to analyze and improve these different weakness in writing. We have two methods. One to focus on coherence, the other to focus on cohesion. In this essay, the method used is based on the principle that coherence and cohesion should work together. I use this approach as a tool to edit and display the analysis of coherence and cohesion in the passage entitled ' Father & Son". This passage is presented as a guided writing exercise in College English Course, Intensive Reading, Band 3, p271.

  • THE FACT APPROACH TO COLLEGE ENGLISH LEARNING

<正> Introduction The proliferation of approaches and methods is a prominent characteristic of contemporary ESL or EFL teaching. From the Grammar Translation Method, the Direct Method, Situational Language Teaching, the Audiolingual Method to Communicative Language Teaching, Total Physical Response, the Silent Way, Community Language Learning, the Natural Approach and Suggestopedia, the discussion has lasted for more than a century. However, the wide variety of method or approach options confuses rather than comforts, because they seem to hold very different views of what language is and how a language is learned (Richards & Rodgers, 1991) . This confusing situation is mainly caused by the myth of the hu-
