Applications of Large Language Models in Language Teaching and Research
大语言模型的语言教学与研究应用
Special Issue for Chinese Journal of Applied Linguistics
Guest Editor:

Background:
The widespread availability of large language models (LLMs) since the release of ChatGPT in November 2022 has profoundly reshaped the landscapes of education and research. Moving beyond the “friend or foe” dichotomy, this special issue encourages in-depth consideration of LLMs’ impact on education, particularly language education. We welcome submissions exploring effects on educational policies (e.g., curriculum and syllabus), language teaching design, teaching implementation, and the roles of teachers, learners and AI individually or interactively. This special issue welcomes empirical research, including quantitative, qualitative, or mixed methods, particularly from the Asia-Pacific region and/or the global south.
Proposed structure:
The special issue would consist of a general introduction by the Guest Editor, in which we summarize current themes and introduce the special issue and the individual manuscripts. This would be followed by six to seven research articles, preferably, by three China-based and three to four overseas researchers.
- Editorial introduction by the Guest Editor, Jiajin Xu
- Paper 1
- Paper 2
- Paper 3
- Paper 4
- Paper 5
- Paper 6
- Book review of Applications of Large Language Models in Language Teaching and Research (Xu et al. 2024/2025) by Feng (Kevin) Jiang, Beihang University
Editorial process:
The general introduction outlines major themes and introduces the chapters. The guest editor will collate the comments from peer reviewers and provide feedback to submitted manuscripts. To ensure a more cohesive volume, further adjustments or modifications may be suggested after the manuscripts are accepted.
We envisage the following submission process.
Step 1: Proposals
Authors interested in submitting a manuscript shall send a short abstract (up to one page) that summarizes the planned contribution to the guest editor via email. The abstracts will then be reviewed by the Guest Editor and probably one or two additional experts in the field, who will provide feedback to the proposed authors.
Step 2: Manuscripts
The authors of accepted abactracts shall submit their manuscripts via CJAL online manuscript system. Submitted manuscripts will undergo the journal’s usual peer-review process. Each manuscript will be reviewed by at least two independent reviewers.
Step 3: Accepted manuscripts shared
An additional round of minor revisions, if appropriate, will be encouraged to revise the respective manuscripts to make the contribute complementary to each other for the special issue.
